Overview
The United States Range Extended Electric Vehicle Market
was valued at USD 0.03 billion in
2025 and is projected to reach USD 24.9
billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR
of 99.3% during the forecast period (2026–2034). The market growth driven
by buyers of large SUVs and pickup trucks who want electric driving for daily
use but need long range, towing ability, and freedom from charging stops. The
market is shifting from a battery-electric-first strategy to a mixed approach
in which range-extended models lead in large vehicles. Government initiatives
and policy changes are shaping demand. The federal clean vehicle tax credits
ended on September 30, 2025 under the July 2025 budget law, and the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency finalized a rule in February 2026, effective
April 20, 2026, that rescinds the greenhouse gas endangerment finding and
repeals federal vehicle greenhouse gas standards. These changes reduce pressure
on automakers to sell only battery-electric vehicles and support flexible
powertrain choices such as EREVs. Federal fuel economy rules under NHTSA remain
in place. By region, the South held the largest share of the market in 2025,
supported by high demand for trucks and SUVs, long driving distances, and new
vehicle plants in Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. The Midwest is expected
to be the fastest-growing region during the forecast period, driven by
first-to-market EREV production in Michigan and by the concentration of truck
and SUV assembly and engineering in the region.

Market Dynamics
KEY MARKET TREND:
Automakers Shifting Large-Vehicle Electrification
Toward Range-Extended Powertrains is a Transformational Trend
- Automakers
are moving their large pickups and SUVs from all-battery designs to
series-hybrid EREV designs, in which a gasoline engine only charges the battery
and electric motors always drive the wheels, so the vehicle keeps the quiet,
quick feel of an EV without range worries when towing or on long trips.
- Suppliers
are building dedicated range-extender hardware, including single-motor
drive-and-generator units, 70 to 150 kW generator systems, and 800V inverters,
which lets automakers launch EREVs faster than developing a full plug-in hybrid
system from scratch.
- Stellantis,
Ford, Hyundai, Kia, and Scout Motors have each confirmed U.S. EREV programs,
but several have seen delays in validating the new powertrains, which means
early launches will set the standard for reliability, price, and real-world
range that later entrants must match.
- Hyundai
Motor Company said at its 2026 CEO Investor Day in August 2026 that the Santa
Fe EREV will start production in the first half of 2027 at its Alabama plant
with over 600 miles of total range and a battery less than half the size of a
comparable EV, and that Genesis will follow with an EREV SUV in early 2027.
KEY MARKET DRIVER:
Slower Battery-Electric Demand, Limited Charging
Access, and Policy Change are Driving Market Growth
- Full-size
pickups and large SUVs lose a large share of their electric range when towing
or hauling, and many owners live where public fast charging is limited, so an
onboard generator that removes charging stops directly addresses the main
barrier to buying an electric truck.
- The USD
7,500 federal new-vehicle clean vehicle credit and the commercial clean vehicle
credit ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, which lowered the
value of large-battery EVs and pushed Ford and Stellantis to redirect capital
to hybrids and EREVs, with Ford alone booking a $19.5 billion charge as it
reset its EV plans.
- The
U.S. EPA's February 2026 final rule repealing federal vehicle greenhouse gas
standards, together with the earlier removal of fuel economy penalties, gives
automakers more freedom to choose EREVs over all-electric models, while NHTSA's
fuel economy rules and criteria pollutant standards still apply.
- According
to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, battery electric vehicles
reached a record 12% of light-duty vehicle sales in September 2025, just before
the credits ended, then fell to 6% of sales in the first half of 2026 versus 7%
a year earlier, while hybrids reached a record 16% share in the second quarter
of 2026.
KEY MARKET OPPORTUNITY:
Expansion of EREV Pickups, Three-Row SUVs, and Fleet
Applications Creates Significant Market Opportunity
- Pickups
and three-row SUVs are the largest and most profitable U.S. vehicle categories
and the ones where buyers tow and travel long distances, so EREVs open a large
group of customers who have not been willing to buy a battery-only truck or
SUV.
- Kia
confirmed a Telluride EREV for 2029 and a body-on-frame EREV pickup by 2030,
and Hyundai plans to follow the Santa Fe with more EREVs, showing that
mainstream brands see room for range-extended models below the luxury price
tier.
- Local
production creates demand for U.S. suppliers of engines, generators, inverters,
and batteries, with Stellantis assembling EREVs in Michigan, Ford planning the
Lightning EREV at its Rouge plant in Dearborn, Hyundai in Alabama, and Scout in
South Carolina, and heavy-duty suppliers such as MAHLE developing range
extenders for commercial trucks that could later reach U.S. fleets.
- Scout
Motors' CEO said that about 87% of its reservations favor the Harvester EREV
version over the all-electric version, and the company is building a $2 billion
factory in South Carolina with capacity of up to 200,000 vehicles per year,
showing customer pull for range-extended models.

Segmentation Analysis
Analysis by Vehicle Type
SUVs & Crossovers held the largest market share in
2025 because most of the first committed U.S. EREV programs are SUVs. Jeep's
Grand Wagoneer EREV is scheduled to start production in November 2026 at the
Warren Truck Plant, Hyundai's Santa Fe EREV is due in the first half of 2027
from Alabama, and Genesis is following with an EREV SUV. Scout reports that
about 75% of its early interest is for the Traveler SUV rather than the Terra
pickup. Large SUVs have enough room for a generator and a mid-size battery, and
family road-trip use makes the long range of an EREV easy to sell.
Pickup Trucks are projected to grow at the fastest CAGR
during the forecast period because pickups benefit the most from a generator
when towing or hauling. The Ram 1500 REV is now expected in mid-April 2027,
Ford has said its next F-150 Lightning will be an EREV with an estimated range
of more than 700 miles, Scout's Terra follows, and Kia plans an EREV pickup by 2030.
With Ram and Ford both dropping their all-electric full-size pickups, EREV is
becoming the main electrified pickup option, and Ram is targeting up to 14,000
lb of towing.

Analysis by Component
Battery Packs held the largest market share in 2025
because the pack is the single most expensive part of an EREV even though it is
smaller than in a battery-only vehicle. The Ram 1500 REV and Jeep Grand
Wagoneer EREV both use a 92 kWh liquid-cooled pack, and Ram says its truck can
add up to 50 miles of electric range in about 10 minutes on a DC fast charger.
Hyundai has developed its own battery cells for the Santa Fe EREV, using less
than half the capacity of a comparable EV. Cost, charging speed, and cold-weather
performance of the pack remain the main points of competition.
Range Extender (Engine-Generator) Units are projected to
grow at the fastest CAGR during the forecast period because this is the part
that every EREV adds and that suppliers are racing to standardize. Magna
launched its DHD REX drive in March 2026, ZF offers eRE and eRE+ systems from
70 to 150 kW, and BorgWarner has won an 800V drive-and-generator contract for
EREV trucks and large SUVs starting in 2029. Stellantis uses a 3.6L V6 with a
130kW generator, while Scout plans a four-cylinder engine from Volkswagen's
Silao plant in Mexico. More programs moving into production between 2027 and
2029 will lift demand for generators, inverters, and thermal systems.

Analysis by Battery Capacity
The 70-100 kWh segment held the largest market share in
2025 because the first U.S. programs from Stellantis use packs in this class.
The Ram 1500 REV and Jeep Grand Wagoneer EREV both use a 92 kWh pack, which
gives the Ram about 145 miles of electric-only range, so owners can do most
daily driving on electricity. Larger packs also support fast charging and
bi-directional features such as vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-vehicle
charging, which Stellantis has highlighted. These packs are paired with 130 kW
generators designed for towing and long highway trips.
The 40-70 kWh segment is projected to grow at the
fastest CAGR during the forecast period because newer programs aim to cut cost
and weight with smaller packs. Scout says its Harvester version uses a battery
about half the size of its 120 kWh all-electric pack and offers about 150 miles
of electric range, and Hyundai says its Santa Fe EREV uses less than half the
battery capacity of a comparable EV. Smaller packs lower vehicle price and
reduce exposure to battery cell costs, which suits mainstream SUVs launching
from Hyundai, Kia, and Scout between 2027 and 2029.

Analysis by End User
Individual Consumers held the largest market share in
2025 because current EREV programs are aimed at retail buyers of premium and
mid-price SUVs and trucks. Scout has reported roughly 160,000 reservations,
with most for the Harvester EREV, Jeep is positioning the Grand Wagoneer EREV
as a flagship SUV, and Hyundai describes the Santa Fe EREV as a vehicle for
daily electric commuting plus long-distance towing. Without federal purchase
credits since October 2025, buyers are weighing a single vehicle that avoids
both charging dependence and the higher price of a large battery.
Commercial Fleets are projected to grow at the fastest
CAGR during the forecast period because fleets need long range, quick
refueling, and towing capacity without building depot charging for every
vehicle. Ram plans a Tradesman trim for the 1500 REV, Ford has said it is
shifting capital toward Ford Pro, trucks, and hybrids, and suppliers such as
MAHLE have unveiled range extenders for heavy electric trucks with over 800 km
of range. Because the federal commercial clean vehicle credit also ended in September
2025, fleets are likely to favor lower-cost, smaller-battery EREV designs that
cut total cost of ownership.

United States Range Extended Electric Vehicle Market Share 2025, (CAGR)
Regional Analysis
The South held the largest market share in 2025,
accounting for 37% of the U.S. market, supported by the highest volume of
pickup and SUV sales, long driving distances, and a growing vehicle
manufacturing base. Hyundai will build the Santa Fe EREV in Alabama starting in
the first half of 2027, Kia assembles the Telluride in Georgia, and Scout is
building a $2 billion plant near Columbia, South Carolina, with support from
state leaders. Texas, Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina are the major state
markets. Federal purchase credits ended in September 2025 and the federal
greenhouse gas standards were repealed in 2026, so demand depends on product
price and range rather than incentives. Competition is expected to be led by
Stellantis, Ford, and Hyundai Motor Group, with Scout entering later.
The Midwest is projected to grow at the fastest CAGR
during the forecast period, supported by first-to-market EREV production and
engineering in Michigan. Stellantis builds the Jeep Grand Wagoneer EREV at the
Warren Truck Plant, targeted to start in November 2026, and the Ram 1500 REV at
Sterling Heights, targeted for April 2027, while Ford plans to build the F-150
Lightning EREV at its Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn. Michigan,
Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana are the major state markets, and the region also
has a strong base of powertrain suppliers and battery plants. The federal EPA
rule and unchanged NHTSA fuel economy rules shape product choices, and harsh
winters and long rural distances favor vehicles with a gasoline backup.
