Overview

The global Chillers Market was valued at approximately USD 11.4 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach around USD 17.1 billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR of approximately 4.5% during the forecast period (2026–2034). The market is driven by rising demand for energy-efficient, low-global-warming-potential (GWP) cooling equipment across commercial buildings, industrial process cooling, food and beverage processing, pharmaceuticals, and, increasingly, hyperscale data centers.

A chiller is a mechanical refrigeration system that removes heat from a liquid, typically water or a water-glycol mixture, through a vapor-compression or absorption cycle, and circulates the chilled liquid to cool air-handling units, industrial processes, or IT equipment. The market is shifting from fixed-speed, high-GWP refrigerant chillers toward variable-speed, oil-free magnetic-bearing chillers using low-GWP refrigerants such as R-1234ze, R-513A, and R-290.

Government initiatives such as the European Union's revised F-Gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573, which imposes a GWP limit of 750 on chillers above 12 kW from 1 January 2027 and phases HFC production quotas down to about 15% of the 2011–2013 baseline by 2036, together with the U.S. EPA's AIM Act HFC phase-down to 15% of baseline by 2036, are accelerating replacement demand for low-GWP-compliant chillers and reshaping refrigerant selection across the industry.

By region, Asia-Pacific held the largest share of the market in 2025, supported by extensive manufacturing, construction, and data center capacity across China, India, Japan, and South Korea. North America is expected to be the fastest-growing region during the forecast period, driven by hyperscale data center build-out, infrastructure upgrades, and stricter federal and state energy-efficiency and refrigerant regulations.

Segmentation Analysis

By Compressor Type

Screw chillers held the largest market share in 2025, supported by their reliability, broad capacity range, and cost efficiency across mid-to-large commercial and industrial cooling loads. Their relatively simple mechanical design and lower maintenance requirements compared with centrifugal systems make them the preferred choice for a wide range of commercial buildings, food and beverage plants, and light-industrial applications, sustaining their leading position across most regional markets.

Centrifugal chillers are projected to grow at the fastest CAGR during the forecast period, driven by surging demand from data centers, pharmaceuticals, and large-scale industrial facilities that require high cooling capacity per unit footprint. The shift toward oil-free, magnetic-bearing centrifugal platforms with lower part-load energy consumption is reinforcing this segment's above-market growth rate.
